Does this exist, and if and so could anyone tell me where I can download it?

Merely looking for a free version that I can download, don't desire to use the app store and don't take iLife.

I don't need a new and fancy version, something bones is fine - just looking for the latest I can go for free on 10.six.five if such a thing exists.

No it does non exist. The iLife suite in of itself (older versions of information technology) are non free and there isn't a standalone version that is gratis other than the current version which will non work on Snow Leopard.

In that case, what's the latest version of iLife that will work with x.6.5?

Does information technology allow y'all to only install GB?

Why are you staying with 10.6.5?

iLife '09 volition be great for 10.6
(run your System Update to practice all updates, which will update a multifariousness of parts of your system.)
Yes, you can cull a custom install of only Garageband.

Merely realised my original software reinstall drive (or the one that came with the laptop anyway - factory slim white apple 8gb stick) says on it "Mac OSX v10.6, iLife '11".

I tried installing GB (lonely) off it but it fails with no reason given. It's the same bulldoze I used for installing OSX and had no issues (it has 10.6.5 on it).

Is information technology just the drive being flaky? Seems odd to include an incompatible version.

Where did you get the "factory slim white apple 8gb stick"?
Apple never supplied Os 10 on a wink bulldoze, prior Lion (Os X 10.7)

Nevertheless should work, but Apple didn't provide that.
Did you run the iLife installer, and select a custom install of just Garageband?
Or, simply try a file copy from the installer (which volition non work)?
Have you lot tried just letting iLife install, without irresolute whatsoever settings? You can always just trash the apps that yous don't desire to keep.

Is there some reason that yous don't upgrade your OS X organisation to x.six.8? You can run Software Update, or only download and install the combined updater straight from Apple tree - from here: http://support.apple tree.com/kb/DL1399

Where did you get the "mill slim white apple 8gb stick"?
Apple never supplied OS Ten on a flash bulldoze, prior Lion (OS X ten.seven)

Still should work, but Apple didn't provide that.

It's from Apple tree. The 2010 Macbook Air came with a USB software restore key which had 10.6.4 or 10.6.5 on it.

Yeah Apple tree did provide it, it's the i described in the post above. That is coincidentally my car exactly - Late '10 MBA and the Apple stick has 10.six.5 and iLife 'eleven on information technology. I'm a bit surprised that people here said merely GB from iLife '09 would work but information technology seems the computer came with '11 - confused.

I ran the installer, and chose a custom install of simply GarageBand (and the compulsory iLife files which you can't un-bank check). I did non effort installing everything simply I actually don't want to practise that. Plenty of free infinite on disk etc.

It doesn't try to do much and quickly says an unknown error occurred, is there a log somewhere I could check?

Unless you lot have a peculiarly compelling reason non to update to 10.6.8, run Software Update and apply all the updates that announced. Information technology make take more than than one round of update/restart to get them all. (Likewise note that all the updates you make it Software Update are free.) Then run into if Garageband installs. If information technology does, yous'll need to run Software Update again to get updates for Garageband.
